Three easy lighting setups that work for almost every portrait.

Studio lighting can look hard at first, but a few simple setups cover most portrait needs. Start with one light, learn how it shapes the face, and then add more slowly. Each setup gives a different mood, so you can choose what fits your subject. These are the setups I use the most.
The one light setup
This is the easiest way to start and still gives beautiful results. A single soft light placed to the side gives gentle shadows and a clean, classic look. Add a reflector to open up the dark side of the face.
Place the softbox at about 45 degrees
Keep the light slightly above eye level
Use a reflector on the opposite side
Move the light closer for softer shadows
Adding a second light for depth
Once you are comfortable, add a second light behind your subject, pointed at the shoulders or hair. This creates a thin rim of light that separates your subject from the backdrop and adds depth. Keep the second light weaker than the main one so it supports the image without taking over. Test different heights and angles, and take a few quick shots to check the result. Small changes in light position can completely change the mood, so take your time. With regular practice, you will build a set of favorite setups you can repeat anywhere.
