You do not need a big budget or a big room to start shooting studio portraits. A clear corner, a plain backdrop, and one good light are enough to begin. A simple setup also helps you learn faster, because there are fewer things to manage. This is how I would build a studio from zero.
What you need to start
Begin with the basics and add more gear only when you truly need it. A small, clean space with enough room to step back from your subject is more important than expensive equipment. Keep everything tidy so your sessions run smoothly.
A plain paper or fabric backdrop
One softbox or soft continuous light
A reflector to fill shadows
A sturdy tripod and a stool for your subject
Making the space work for you
Choose a room with enough distance between your subject and the backdrop, so shadows do not fall on the wall. Place your light at a slight angle to your subject and use the reflector on the opposite side for balanced, soft results. Keep the floor clean and test your setup before every session. Mark your light and camera positions with tape so you can repeat the same look anytime. Over time, you will learn what works best in your space, and a small home studio will feel as capable as a big one.
