Midday sun is the hardest light to work with, but it is not impossible. Strong shadows, squinting eyes, and bright highlights can make photos look rough. With the right spot and a few simple tools, you can still get clean and pleasing images. Here is what works best for me.
Finding better light
The easiest fix is to change where you shoot. Moving your subject out of direct sun immediately makes the light softer and more even. A little planning saves a lot of editing later.
Look for open shade under trees or buildings
Use a diffuser to soften strong sun
Keep the sun behind your subject
Add fill light or a reflector for the face
Working with the sun, not against it
If you cannot avoid the sun, use it creatively. Place your subject with their back to the sun to create a bright halo around the hair, then expose for the face so skin stays natural. A reflector or a small flash can fill in the shadows. Ask your subject to close their eyes for a moment and open them just before you shoot, so they look relaxed. Shoot with a wider aperture for soft background blur, and keep an eye on the highlights. When you accept the light and plan around it, midday can give you fresh, bright, and bold photos.
